Pastel neon’ looks at how hidden memories and influences from pop culture of the 80s (that have made a come back in contemporary culture) impact on identity and creativity. The work celebrates the current incarnation of these influences as being softer and more accepting of the individual. The hard edges and perfection-seeking aspects of the 80s have fallen away and allowed for a sense of freedom and grace.

'I work in an intuitive way, so sometimes the story of the work can be revealed to me during the process of creating the work, rather than through planning beforehand.

'When I was 3/4 of the way through painting this collection I found a photo of my late mother taken in the mid 80s. In the photo she was 36-ish and I was about 15. She was wearing a cotton summer dress I had pushed her buy. She rarely wore it because it made her feel like a 36 yr old passing herself off as a 16 year old and she'd be the first to tell you that she didn't like drama!

'But the photo captured her cheeky, playful side - her dress was short and pale aqua with crimson geometric panels on the shoulders and pockets. It strikes me now how the details of the dress ~ the colours and shapes ~ have appeared in nearly all of the paintings in this series.

'The memory is bitter sweet, but its a kind of confirmation of who I have always been, as a person and artist. The playful uplifting nature of both pastels and neons, that were prevalent colour themes in the 80s creates a powerful mood effect in my work.

'I’m particularly in love with the neon pink and aqua combination. Geometric shapes have always been attractive to me, but they have lost their hard edges and perfect lines and gathered meaning over time.'
